One of the most common tropes in Mass Effect self-insert stories is having the protagonist quietly preserve the original timeline while making small improvements along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My Effect: Divergence<\/em> does the exact opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rather than trying to stay out of the way, the protagonist completely changes the course of history before the events of the original trilogy even begin. His very first major decision is adopting a young Shepard after the Batarian raid on Mindoir, setting the entire timeline on a new path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That single decision creates ripple effects that continue throughout the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unlike many self-insert stories, this isn’t a power fantasy. The protagonist isn’t a super genius, doesn’t possess incredible combat abilities, and doesn’t somehow solve every problem through future knowledge alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, he succeeds because he makes one important decision early on, earns the trust of influential people, and gradually builds from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What I particularly enjoy is how willing the story is to diverge from canon. Instead of replaying familiar events with only minor variations, the author explores genuinely different possibilities while keeping the spirit of the Mass Effect universe intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The changes affect both the larger political landscape and the personal journeys of individual characters, creating consequences that feel believable rather than arbitrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although this isn’t a comedy like many of the stories I usually recommend, it is a thoughtful and well-written alternate take on Mass Effect that asks an interesting question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “What if someone really changed history instead of simply trying to survive it?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
