This fanfic is a delicious example of crack treated seriously.
I laughed a lot while reading it, but what surprised me most was how much I enjoyed the character development. What starts as a deeply skeptical protagonist gradually becomes someone genuinely concerned about the lives and well-being of the people under their responsibility.
The entire story revolves around the protagonist accidentally discovering terrifying powers inspired by H. P. Lovecraft’s mythos.
And their first reaction isn’t excitement.
It is sheer panic.
Rather than embracing these powers, the protagonist becomes increasingly terrified of what they could do to ordinary people. This leads to the creation of rules, regulations, and safeguards designed to prevent the organization from falling under the influence of eldritch entities and forces beyond human understanding.
Naturally, this creates some hilarious situations.
There are even posters on the walls warning people not to take the cute fairies home.
They will eat your beloved memories.
This is the kind of story where something genuinely horrifying can also be incredibly funny, because the characters treat supernatural cosmic horrors with the same practical concern you might have when dealing with workplace safety regulations.
Beneath all the comedy, though, there is a surprisingly warm story about caring for your fellow human beings despite all the differences between us.
The story isn’t always lighthearted, and there are moments where the consequences of these powers become genuinely unsettling. It also occasionally gives you something to think about regarding responsibility, power, and what it means to protect people from dangers they don’t even understand.
If you enjoy Tanya the Evil, eldritch horror, dark comedy, and stories where terrifying powers are treated with an almost bureaucratic level of caution, this is a very fun read.
