Comedy of mistakes is, in all honesty, my favorite trope.
It is difficult to write well, but when it works, it is an absolute delight to read.
A Rabbit Among Wolves is one of my favorite fanfics of all time. The premise alone is ridiculous: Jaune Arc accidentally becomes the leader of a White Fang unit in Vale.
And somehow, it gets even better from there.
The sequence of events that leads to Jaune’s new position is a chef’s kiss. What starts with fake Huntsmen eventually turns into Jaune becoming the leader of a cultural revolution that helps redeem the White Fang and changes Vale’s political landscape.
The story is packed with misunderstandings, hilarious consequences, great dialogue, and situations that keep spiraling further and further out of control.
At the center of it all is a Jaune Arc who is essentially BSing his way through every problem he encounters.
He keeps surviving.
He keeps succeeding.
And he is constantly left wondering:
“How the hell did things end up like this?”
That is the heart of the comedy, and the author executes it remarkably well. The situations are absurd, but the characters take them seriously, which makes Jaune’s accidental rise to prominence even funnier.
The story also does a surprisingly good job with its political and cultural elements. The changes to the White Fang and Vale don’t simply disappear after a joke; they have lasting consequences for the world and its characters.
This is a complete fanfic with a very satisfying conclusion, which makes it an especially easy recommendation.
If you enjoy comedy of mistakes, accidental leadership, political chaos, and a protagonist who somehow keeps failing upward into success, A Rabbit Among Wolves is absolutely worth reading.
It is the kind of fic you can pick up on a rainy day, curl up under a blanket with, and simply enjoy.
