Orochimama, also known as The Snake Goes Ara Ara, is a self-insert comedy where the reincarnated protagonist finds herself in the body of a gender-bent Orochimaru after an immortality experiment goes horribly wrong.
And somehow, it works.
Orochimama is hilarious, but it is not just a crack comedy. Beneath all the jokes, the story explores political reform, kingdom building, and the wider world of the Elemental Nations.
The protagonist has fun dropping hints, revealing terrifying pieces of information, and watching the people around her try to figure out what she knows.
There is also a healthy dose of the “failing upward” trope. Orochimama’s actions are frequently misunderstood by her followers, who assume that every strange decision is part of some elaborate master plan.
The funny thing is that she actually is a competent tactician and schemer.
Unlike a protagonist who simply gets lucky all the time, Orochimama sets goals and works toward them through planning, deception, manipulation, and good old-fashioned hard work.
The fights are decent, but the political maneuvering is where the story really shines. You rarely have the complete picture of what is happening, and some of the best moments come when the story finally reveals what Orochimama had been planning all along.
It makes following the plot surprisingly satisfying. You get to watch the pieces move around the board without always knowing why, only to eventually discover how they fit together.
My biggest complaint is the update schedule. Updates have become rather glacial, and new chapters can take a long time to arrive.
Still, Orochimama is a fun and easy read. It is the kind of story you can pick up during the day, read a few chapters, and enjoy another ridiculous situation caused by Orochimama’s latest scheme.
If you enjoy Naruto self-inserts, political intrigue, kingdom building, and comedy built around misunderstandings and clever planning, this one is well worth checking out.
