Cohort of Hunters stands out because it does something surprisingly rare for a RWBY self-insert story.
Instead of following another overpowered Huntsman-in-training, the protagonist is essentially an administrator—a military planner with a talent for organization, logistics, and institutional reform rather than direct combat.
That single decision gives the story a completely different flavor.
The author expands the world of Remnant in a way that feels both natural and believable, paying attention to the parts of the setting that are usually ignored.
Technically, the story is also a crossover, borrowing technological concepts from Star Wars and Titanfall. However, no characters or worlds actually cross over, making it feel more like inspiration than a traditional crossover.
As with many of my favorite fanfics, the story leans heavily into the “failing upward” trope. The protagonist is constantly trying to solve practical problems, only for his actions to create unexpected political consequences and increasingly absurd misunderstandings.
One of the most interesting aspects is its exploration of Remnant’s military structure. Rather than changing the world through superior combat skills, the protagonist attempts to improve institutions through regulations, organization, and long-term planning.
Naturally, this leads to plenty of political intrigue, bureaucratic chaos, and some genuinely hilarious situations.
The story spends a significant amount of time before the events of the original RWBY series, allowing the author’s changes to reshape the world gradually. When canon finally begins, those earlier decisions have already transformed the setting in meaningful ways.
If you’re looking for a RWBY self-insert that focuses on administration, military reform, politics, and worldbuilding rather than another invincible fighter, Cohort of Hunters is an excellent choice.
