The Lord of the Rings was the very first novel I ever read. It took me nearly six months to finish, but it started a lifelong love of fantasy literature.
Because of that, I’m usually very picky when it comes to Lord of the Rings fanfiction.
Few stories truly capture Tolkien’s world, but this crossover is one of the best I’ve found.
The story combines A Song of Ice and Fire with The Lord of the Rings. Around the time of the Red Wedding, the entire Westerlands—including House Lannister—are mysteriously transported to Middle-earth just before the War of the Ring.
Rather than focusing on action alone, the story explores what happens when two fundamentally different worlds collide.
The idealism, hope, and heroism of Middle-earth stand in sharp contrast to the cynical politics and ruthless pragmatism of Westeros. Watching these cultures interact is easily one of the story’s greatest strengths.
Even better, the author remains remarkably faithful to the personalities of both casts. None of the characters feel out of place, and their reactions to this impossible situation feel believable.
One of my favorite aspects of the story is seeing Middle-earth through Westerosi eyes. Familiar places, customs, and peoples suddenly become strange again because they are being experienced by outsiders with completely different values.
I also loved the expanded role given to the Hobbits. Seeing the Shire organize and send its own expeditionary force during the War of the Ring was both unexpected and surprisingly satisfying.
If you enjoy culture clashes, political intrigue, and respectful crossovers that take both source materials seriously, this is an excellent read.
