I have always loved both Mass Effect and the Mega Man X series.
Unfortunately, Mega Man is one of those classic action franchises from the 1990s that never had much room for storytelling because of the hardware limitations of the time. As a result, finding truly good Mega Man fanfiction is surprisingly difficult.
This crossover was a pleasant surprise.
Rather than taking place during the classic Mega Man games, the story is set after Mega Man ZX, meaning humanity has already endured centuries of conflict against Mavericks and Reploids before eventually rebuilding society.
One of my favorite aspects of this fanfic is its depiction of that future. Humans and Reploids coexist naturally, and the world feels like a believable continuation of the Mega Man timeline.
The characters are likable, and if you grew up playing the Mega Man games, the story is packed with small references and technologies that will immediately feel familiar.
The author also has a lot of fun exploring the wonderfully over-the-top technology that has always been part of the Mega Man universe and imagining how it would compare to Mass Effect’s technology.
The crossover itself focuses on humanity’s first contact with the Citadel races. Instead of trying to tell an enormous galactic epic, it presents a compact first-contact story that lets the two universes interact in interesting ways.
Although the story is fairly short, it succeeds in creating an enjoyable crossover that feels respectful to both franchises.
If you’re both a Mega Man fan and a Mass Effect fan, this is definitely worth reading.

Original Summary
A three-shot story (for now) showing how the First Contact War should have played out when you don’t want to make either the Turians or humanity into punching bags. Crossover with Mega Man.
