Dust and Echoes is a fantastic crossover that successfully blends the science-fiction elements of Halo with the fantasy world of RWBY.
One of the first things that stood out to me was the quality of the writing. The characters feel alive and believable, and while the story includes several original characters, they never feel out of place. Instead, they fit naturally into the setting and contribute meaningfully to the narrative.
The story centers around a first-contact scenario between the Halo and RWBY universes. A UNSC fleet makes an unexpected slipspace jump and discovers the Remnant system, where they encounter a previously unknown branch of humanity.
The result is an engaging exploration of cultural differences, cooperation, and the challenges of bringing two very different worlds together.
One area where Dust and Echoes truly shines is the amount of research and respect the authors show toward both franchises. The story feels like it was written by people who genuinely understand and appreciate both universes.
Because of that, I believe fans of either Halo or RWBY can enjoy the story even if they are less familiar with the other franchise.
The characters remain at the center of the narrative, supported by exciting action sequences and large-scale battles that capture the strengths of both settings.
As has become a recurring theme among many of my favorite stories, there is also a healthy dose of politics and diplomacy involved as different factions attempt to navigate this new reality.
The fic is lengthy, still ongoing, and available on multiple platforms, including FanFiction.net, Archive of Our Own, and SpaceBattles.
If you enjoy first-contact stories, military science fiction, political intrigue, and respectful crossover worldbuilding, Dust and Echoes is well worth your time.
