Hello everyone, and welcome to the first review on this blog.
A Young Woman’s Political Record by jacobk is one of my favorite fanfics of all time.
Based on The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki), this story was written before the original series had fully concluded, yet it still feels incredibly fitting for the world and characters.
The story follows Tanya after the Great War, now living in the newly formed Republic of Germania. After being discovered by the Workers Political Party, she somehow — mostly by accident — ends up becoming Chancellor during the middle of the Great Depression.
What follows is a fantastic comedy of misunderstandings, political chaos, and accidental success. Honestly, this is exactly my favorite type of comedy: watching everything go terribly wrong while somehow working perfectly in the end.
Despite dealing with politics and some heavier themes, the story remains surprisingly fun and easy to read. It is the kind of fanfic that helps you forget your problems for a while and simply enjoy the ride.
One thing I especially liked is that the story does not lean too heavily into real-world politics. The focus stays on the characters, the absurd situations, and Tanya trying to survive the consequences of her own “successful failures.”
There are also some nice bits of worldbuilding and references to characters from the original work, which makes the setting feel alive without overwhelming the reader.
If you enjoy:
- political fantasy
- misunderstanding comedy
- competent protagonists
- Tanya the Evil fanfiction
then this story is absolutely worth reading.
